Courting Cate (The Courtships of Lancaster County, Book 1) I wanted to like this book However, it just didn t work out that way.One of the things I didn t like, this is quite common for me, is the fact that Pete Cate wouldn t just communicate with one another When something is on my mind or my husbands we talk about it We talk it out We say how we feel even if we make very little progress on the matter at hand, we at least know how eachother feels I guess I just never understood why these characters wouldn t talk Communication between them in this story would have saved them a lot of heartache I spent a long time feeling so bad for Cate while at Pete s parents house I hated that her husband treated her the way he did I hated that he wouldn t stand up for her some.Cate s sister was spoiled selfish I can t for the life of me figure out why Cate married a man she didn t love to try and fix her sister s situation It would have worked itself out without her having to do that if they had tried a reasonable approach I will say that I did like that Cate found her way back to God That made me happy Even though I still didn t like Pete after that. ResourcesA Clever Take On Shakespeare S The Taming Of The Shrew Gould Is A Fabulous Writer In Her Own Right This Charming Series Debut Should Appeal To Fans Of Beverly Lewis And Marta Perry Library Journal The book depicts what most Amish women s lives are like Neverending hard work that start before sun up Ruled by the men in their lives and community A good example is when Cate is tricked on her wedding day by her mother in law and husband to return to Cattarugus County, New York and his parents farm They both begin the marriage in servitude.Cate s mother died when she was six years old after giving birth to Betsy For the next five years Cate has her grandmother to help her But at the age of eleven she no longer has that and is left to raise Betsy.Cate s father a farmer by trade quits farming and opens a wood working business and other ventures Cate at twenty three runs the office for her father While Betsy now seventeen runs the house Which is good because Cate hates cooking, cleaning and can t cook.Their father Bob Miller wants Cate to marry, have a home and children However, this is not what Cate wants. After a life time of being ridiculed by the Mosier brothers she feels she is unlovable and no one would want to court or marry her She tells her father this and he might as well get use to it.So, he proclaims that Betsy can not court or marry until Cate does Which causes trouble between the sisters.Cate being a avid reader since she was seven goes to meet the traveling bookmobile weekly By a chance meeting she meets Pete Treger Marvin and Martin Mosier M M twins and Levi Rupp Betsy s bo are also at the bookmobile.Nan the librarian is Pete s distant cousin from back home Nan hasn t seen Pete in thirteen years and ask what he was doing there He replies I m looking for work, for a man named Bob Miller.Pete having a very unhappy childhood left on Rumspinga and never returned home While traveling across the county the people Amish in Ohio told him that he should look up Bob Miller once he arrived He told Nan that they said Bob had work and two beautiful daughters M M retorts that they had part of the equation right, two thirds of it anyway, ridiculing Cate Pete didn t catch the humor Pete stated that he was hoping to find a job and a wife. So, he ask where he might find Bob Miller Martin nodded toward Cate s buggy and tells Pete, that rig right there could take you to him in no time Cate said that Bob was her dad and he isn t hiring Levi blurts out But he is looking for a husband for a certain daughter Martin laughted saying that one daughter is known for her charming beauty and the other for her scolding tongue We use to call her Cate the Curse And still do,that is when Nan interputed him.Cate headed for her buggy and Pete wanted to know it he could at least meet her dad Cate told him again he is not hiring and left Pete standing there But Pete shows up at her dad s and got the job anyway and this is really where the story starts Will leave the rest for the readers explore and enjoy. This is a work of fiction, not a documentry on the Amish Not hard to beleive that Betsy didn t know about the Birds and the Bees ,it is not a subject taught or spoken about, even today..Growing up on a 380 acre farm in the 1950 s, 60 s and 70 s myself it was not spoken about Most of the farm girls I knew were sheltered from this aspect of farm life Most were not even allow around the killing and butchering My younger sister by four years wasn t even taught to cook or do any of the farm work I did starting before the age of 8 Like milking by hand 50 cows out of 150 before 6 00a.m., then fixing breakfast for everyone, cleaning up dishes and myself before getting ready to catch the school bus by 8 00 I live in Amish country in Oklahoma I have Pennsylvania Dutch, Brethren and Quaker in my ancestry. So to read some of things others can t believe is not to far fitched for me.I would recommend this book to anyone. This is a very engaging story and quite compelling but I was really disappointed by the double standard Rather than be a true romance, the book centred on the failings of one woman and how she needed to give into Gods plan and let go of her bitterness and judgement So I would say, its a morality tale and not a romance.Spoilers aheadWhat I absolutely disliked about this book was the way Pete turned into such a mean spirited wretch from the wedding day on No one forced him into marriage We understand the whys but his treatment of his wife wife to be on her wedding day was just despicable What a double standard She needs to learn humility but his harsh and barely Christian behaviour goes uncommented on and he is doing this because he loves her and wants to build a life with her He talks about reverse psychology but doesn t apologise for the way he treated her Frankly, she had to be very strong in her faith to not throw herself under a bus for a while there It made for very depressing reading. It seems that pride comes before a fall but only if you are Cate The spoilt younger sister manipulates everyone and doesn t care about the consequences for others, very Christian indeed.
